St. Severinus of Noricum

Circa 1520
Wood
Cathedral of St. Stephen, Passau, Germany

The cathedral's label identifies this statue as St. Severinus. Other saints with that name are all bishops, so this Severinus can only be Severinus of Noricum. But it is unclear why he would be carrying a spear. The saint did help the Norici deal with invading barbarians, but mostly by exhorting them to pray or warning them when the enemies were approaching. Also, his biographer stated plainly that Severinus never wore shoes of any kind, even in winter (Eugippius, 38).
